Believe Diapers is the Disruptor Mamas Have Been Waiting For Meet the diaper brand giving back.

While diaper companies across the country are raising prices, Believe Diapers is giving away their product for free. Yes. The same, premium eco-friendly, organic bamboo-based, healthy diapers that they worked hard to create. And no, they’re not changing their prices. Talk about a disruptor. But this should come as no surprise to those familiar with the husband and wife-founded brand known equally for their quality product as they are for their charitable 1-for-1 model.

American families are being hit by diaper price hikes, and it’s only about to get worse. Over the past year, diaper prices already rose nearly 10% and as of last week, two major diaper manufacturers have announced additional price increases.

Diapers are already a huge expense for Americans, and the problem is only getting worse. “It costs around $80 a month to provide diapers for one child, and one in three American families struggled to afford diapers even before the pandemic,” Joanne Goldblum, chief executive officer of the National Diaper Bank Network told CNN in an interview. The National Diaper Bank Network, which has over 200 diaper banks nationwide, reported an “86% increase on average in the number of diapers distributed to children and families during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic figures.”

Believe Diapers is not only designed to prevent blowouts and leaks, but it is hypoallergenic and allows for fewer diaper changes. It is the newest eco-friendly, socially responsible diaper to hit the market, and has created a product for a new generation of parents that deserve a new kind of diaper. A diaper that surpasses all expectations when it comes to quality and sustainability (i.e. safe for sensitive skin, super-absorbent, chemical-free, and planet-friendly) and has a purpose.

To date, in the three months since its February launch, Believe Diapers has donated over 1 million diapers to U.S. families in need and the number keeps growing.

A few basic things to know about this 5-star diaper? (And yes, 5-star is an accurate accolade, just read the multitude of reviews on their site.)

The diapers are made from organic bamboo. Did you know that bamboo is recommended by dermatologists for being a naturally anti-bacterial, deodorizing, breathable, and super-absorbent fiber? It’s naturally moisture-wicking and thermal regulating to keep your little one constantly cozy. What’s more is that bamboo is biodegradable, helping reduce 2.3 times less water waste than standard disposable diapers and decomposing about 500 years faster.

It’s impossible to stress the importance of Believe Diapers’ charitable 1-for-1 matching program. Each diaper sold means a diaper donated to a U.S. family in need, meaning when you buy a diaper from Believe Diapers you are helping to create a new (and very necessary) standard in premium diapers.

The Kitchen Appliance That's 1,000 Times More Useful During Pregnancy Mind = BLOWN.

“When I got towards the end of my pregnancy and could barely see the floor (let alone actually bend down), I started using kitchen tongs to pick stuff up. Especially in the shower when there’s no room, keep a pair of tongs right next to you for grabbing anything that may have slipped.”

WTF is Belly Binding? And should I do it?

By Babe | Photos by @laylacremer

Kourtney Kardashian did it. So did Jessica Alba. Brooke Burke hailed the benefits of doing it for 40 days and 40 nights after she had her kids. No, we’re not talking about another juice cleanse. We’re talking about belly binding, a postnatal trend that might seem invented on Instagram, but it’s actually hundreds of years old.

To sum it up, belly binding is when you wrap a large piece of cloth (or a girdle, corset, muslin) around your abdomen. Generally you wrap the material quite tightly so that it supports and keeps your abs in place, which can be especially helpful after you give birth. Some celebrities claim it helped get their bodies “back” following pregnancy. Particularly if you’ve had a c-section, belly binding can help ensure your incision heals properly, as it requires cutting through numerous layers of tissue and muscle. According to Healthline, one study found that women who delivered by c-section and practiced belly binding during recovery experienced less pain, bleeding, and discomfort as compared to those who had a c-section and didn’t use belly binding.

How does belly binding work? When you’re pregnant, your body stretches out to make room for babe. Organs move out of their normal position, and even your abdominal muscles separate to make space. After you give birth, your body moves those muscles and organs back to their original position. When done properly, belly binding applied to the abdomen and around the hips can support your pelvic floor. It also offers gentle compression that holds muscle and ligaments safely in place as your body heals.

Please note, belly binding is not “waist training” or an even instant weight loss theory. If your goal is to get your body back, medical experts caution against using waist trainers, especially for postpartum recovery, because of the potential negative side effects. If you wear one too tightly, you can run the risk of impaired breathing and organ damage. There’s also unintended side effects like acid reflux and heartburn. “They do not help you lose weight after delivery, nor do they have any effect on body shape,” Dr. Joseph Chappelle, an assistant professor of OB-GYN at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, told Care.com.

If you do decide to try belly binding, know that if you give birth vaginally, you can use it right away. If you delivered via C-section, you should wait until your incision is healed and dry before applying it. And lastly, always talk to your doctor or midwife before you begin belly binding. As for which type of binding to use, the most popular version is the Bengkung variety, which wraps around the abdomen with a long strip of cloth. It’s rooted in Malaysian culture and claims to provide postural support for the torso and organs as they return to pre-pregnancy position.

Helping Children With This Rare Childhood Disease May Help 50 Million Adults What you need to know about INAD

According to the National Institutes of Health, there are over 7,000 rare diseases currently affecting people around the world. There’s only one – that we currently know of – where helping the children affected can potentially also benefit 50 million adults. It’s called Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD) and Bisous For Léo (BisousForLeo.org) is striving to eradicate it.

Here, their team shares the most commonly asked questions about INAD and Bisous for Léo.

What is it?

Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD) is a rare inherited neurological disorder. It affects axons, the part of a nerve cell that carries messages from the brain to other parts of the body, and causes progressive loss of vision, muscular control, and mental skills. Symptoms typically begin within the first two years of life, with the loss of head control and the ability to sit, crawl, or walk, accompanied by deterioration in vision and speech. There is no cure for INAD and no treatment that can stop the progress of the disease. There are approximately 150 children around the world who currently have INAD and their typical life span ranges between five and 10 years.

What does INAD have to do with adults?

There have been numerous studies that address the link between INAD and Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Lewy Body Dementia. The kids who have INAD share the exact same gene mutation with some forms of Parkinson’s and have the same pathogenesis and neurofibrillary tangles as those affected by Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Dementia. Instead of saying there are “only” 150 children worldwide who have INAD, Bisous For Léo is shifting the dialogue. Children with INAD are an integral piece of the larger neurodegenerative disease puzzle.

What is Bisous For Léo?

Bisous For Léo is an ancillary arm of the INADcure Foundation, the only US-based non-profit trying to identify treatment and cure options for the disease. INADcure and Bisous For Léo were both founded by parents whose children have INAD. Together the entities are racing the clock to not only save their own children, but all of the children with INAD globally.

How can you get INAD?

INAD is autosomal recessive, meaning that both parents must be carriers of the mutation to potentially pass it on. In other words, neither parent displays symptoms of any kind so the mutation is unwittingly passed down. In a standard pregnancy, there is a 25% chance that carrier parents will pass on their recessive PLA2G6 gene and have a child with INAD, a 50% chance that the child will be a carrier like his/her parents but not have INAD, and a 25% chance that the child will neither be a carrier nor have INAD.

Does my doctor automatically test for this?

Currently INAD is not included in the standard pregnancy panels. You must be aware of it in order to advocate for yourself when genetic testing.

How are people getting the word out about this?

There is an ongoing “kiss campaign” running on social media where people post their bisous (kisses) in support of the cause, while tagging @bisousforleo and encouraging others to follow suit. It doesn’t matter how many followers you have – your kiss can literally change the world! To date, celebrities such as Gal Gadot, Priyanka Chopra, Laura Dern, Sebastian Stan, Isla Fisher, Eva Longoria, Jamie Lynn Sigler, Ben McKenzie, Julianna Hough, Josh Gad, Andy Cohen and Busy Phillips (the list goes on…!), have all posted their kisses in support.

What is being done medically?

Bisous For Léo and the INADcure Foundation have medical partnerships with the NBIA Research Group at Oregon Health and Science University, Baylor College of Medicine, and The New York Stem Cell Foundation. Supporting this work is essential to progress treatment and cure development. For more medical information, please visit BisousForLeo.org.

How are medical initiatives being funded?

Donations! Everything is in motion thanks to the generosity of supporters. There is currently no governmental support.

How to buy a cribHow to buy a crib

9 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Crib What to know about the most important item on your registry.

Gone are the days of having to resort to impersonal, boring, design-lacking options when shopping for cribs. Today, the options are plentiful, and thankfully, many are quite aesthetically pleasing. But how do you determine what’s good from what’s great? How do you decide on arguably the most important piece of furniture that will go into your little one’s nursery?

Sustainably crafted in Brazil and JPMA certified to exceed safety standards, Nestig offers elevated, functional cribs that transform from a mini-crib to a full crib to a toddler bed. Flexible, multifunctional, eco-friendly, and of the highest quality, these babies check all the boxes.

RELATED: 9 Tips for a Lower Waste Pregnancy

Here, we speak to Nestig’s Co-Founder and CMO Sara Adam Slywka about the essential questions to ask when shopping for a crib.

1. What certifications does it have?

“You want to make sure the company has done its homework and that the product has been tested by a third party in a laboratory,” says Slywka. Nestig is JPMA certified, which means the brand is fully verified as compliant with all crib safety requirements. Other things to consider when shopping: paint and finishing, is the brand being open and transparent andis the brand open to answering your questions.

2. Does it fit well with your lifestyle?

“Nestig has talked to so many parents who have expressed that they’re going through a transitional period,” Slywka says. This innate sense of transition ultimately informed their design. “Our crib uniquely fits with different types of life changes, whether you’re moving, or you’re not sure about what sleep arrangement you want.” Nestig’s Wave, Cloud and Snow cribs all start as a mini giving you flexibility and eliminating any need to purchase another bassinet that will have a short lifespan of usefulness. Look for something that is flexible for you as you learn what your new lifestyle will become. “You don’t want to lock yourself into a sleep arrangement that will be cumbersome to navigate.”

3. Do you feel good about the way it was made?

Say it with us: TRANSPARENCY. IN. SUPPLY. CHAIN. Know where and by whom your cribs are being made. “All our cribs are manufactured in Brazil from FSC certified, sustainably harvested wood. Each of our manufacturers is a family-owned business that we’ve personally visited multiple times. They’re true craftsmen. We feel really strongly that we want to have that transparency and level of trust both to make a quality product and also about feeling good about the ecosystem, supplies, and labor practices.”

4. Will the assembly make you want to pull your hair out?

There’s nothing that sounds less appealing while pregnant than struggling to assemble a super complicated piece of furniture. “One of our goals in the design process was to make assembly as simple as possible and we hear all the time from customers that the assembly was a breeze” says Slywka. Nestig’s Wave and Cloud cribs are some of the easiest cribs to assemble on the market. We say pick a crib that is easy to assemble and convert and future you will thank you.

5. Do you love the design?

The nursery is such a special room and should never be an afterthought. “It’s the space you’ll be having so many milestone moments and we believe that’s something to celebrate,” says Slywka. “Having a room you’re excited about imagining these future moments and then ultimately experiencing them is a beautiful thing. It’s such an overwhelming time so it’s not that you need this picture-perfect space, but having a space that inspires you unlocks a really special magical energy.” So with that in mind, make sure you love the furniture that you’re choosing. Safety, first, of course. But you don’t have to sacrifice your style.

Our Nestig Favorites

6. How long will it last you?

“We thought about this a lot with our products,” Slywka explains. Nestig designed their cribs to last 3-4 years, depending on the size of your little one. “Our goal is to create something that will last multiple life stages. We think parents should be thinking about that as they make the decision.”

7. Will you have to buy additional parts down the road?

If you’re in the market for a convertible crib that will last you multiple years, you don’t want to get stuck constantly having to buy new parts. “All of our toddler bed conversions are included from the start,” Slywka says.” “The only thing we don’t include is a full-size crib mattress.  Each conversion has its own box so it’s super organized. You only open each conversion as you need it, It’s nicely contained verses in pieces under a bed.” Music to our ears.

8. Are there helpful reviews?

If you read the reviews, you want to make sure you’re looking for quality reviews that say something. Look for reviews that help you decide if the product is right for you. (Pro tip: there are some EXTREMELY helpful and Hatch staff-approved reviews on Nestig’s site if you scroll to the bottom of each product’s page.)

9. What kind of customer service will you receive after you’ve purchased the product?

As a new parent, you’ll have lots of questions. A piece as important as a crib should be bought from a brand you trust will have amazing customer service that makes you feel secure and safe. “We get lots of questions about assembly, safety, and we’re happy to be a second set of eyes to provide that reassurance,” Slywka tells us. “It’s a big purchase and you should feel comfortable asking every question and getting answered in a timely manner.”

Pro-Wrestler + TV-Star Brandi Rhodes Says no dream is ever too big.

By Ruthie Friedlander

With a long list of accomplishments and big ‘firsts,’ this pro-wrestler, Chief Brand Officer of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), and star of Rhodes To The Top is pregnant with a girl.

From figure skating and modeling to an unexpected turn into wrestling, this soon-to-be mama gave us the low-down on *finally* deciding to get pregnant, nine months of nausea, non-craving cravings, and why no dream is ever too big.

Feeling?

Lucky for me I’ve been nauseous the entire time and while I have medicine, which helps, it’s never completely gone. Plus, I have acid reflux, as well as sciatic and nerve pain, so, you know, all that good stuff.

Boy or Girl?

We are having a little girl, but truthfully I didn’t have a preference about what we were having, but I did want to find out so I could start planning the nursery and creating a registry tailored to the sex of our baby as opposed to just being uni.

Path to pregnancy?

I’m the Chief Brand Officer of AEW, plus I’m a wrestler too–which is a twenty-four-seven job with no offseason. Before Covid, I was always on the go traveling to a different city every week. Over the years, we had thought about having a baby, but it never seemed like the “right” time because of everything we have going on. However, when the pandemic hit and forced us (along with the world) to slow down, it gave us pause and the time to consider starting a family. Once we wrapped our head around trying to get pregnant, it happened much quicker than we would have thought. I’m 37 and have friends my age who’ve had it take a long time and others who’ve had it happen as soon as they focused in; the latter was true for us. Once we got serious, it happened quickly.

Discovered your loved for wrestling?

About ten years ago, after a 17-year career in figure skating, I was scouted for wrestling while living in Miami and working as a model. Back then, it was pretty standard for the professional wrestling industry to scout girls through their modeling agencies as it’s part of the television entertainment industry. I had a tryout, started training, and was hooked. It’s one of those things you either love or don’t; there’s little in between. Now, here we are, ten years later, in a completely different place and stage in my wrestling career and exactly where I was meant to be.

Working out while pregnant?

For the most part I’ve kept up with my normal fitness routine a side from a few alterations. Obviously, I’m not wrestling (that would be very frowned upon) but otherwise, I still do cardio, lift weights, squats, and all of that good stuff. I pay close attention and every once in a while, if something doesn’t feel right, we alter.

Crazy cravings?

That’s been the most disappointing part! I imagined I would have all these crazy cravings, eat whatever I wanted, and enjoy foods that maybe I don’t always get a chance to, but I just haven’t had that reaction nor any major cravings. Usually, I’m a super sweet tooth person and thought I would want dessert and ice cream all the time; but, I don’t. So yes, nothing binge-worthy to report.

Birth plan?

I’m not an overthinker, but I am working with a doula and planning a hospital birth. I’m hoping to have a natural delivery, but if I can’t, hey, I can’t, and we’ll be ready to do whatever is necessary. My goal is simply to have a healthy, happy baby at the end.

Pregnancy reads?

When I started reading pregnancy and baby books, I noticed they don’t say a lot and tend to leave everything up to you, so I haven’t been super big on reading and instead rely on communicating with my doctor and doula.

Power of a support system?

Wild as it sounds, everyone I know right now is pregnant. It’s the most ridiculous and fantastic thing! My best friend is pregnant with twins. Plus, one of my good friends that lives near me is having her first right now. And a colleague from the wrestling industry is pregnant too, a month ahead of me. It’s been wonderful to have this great support system to talk to *and complain to.* We all bounce ideas off of each other, which makes it feel like I’m not doing this for the first time alone.

One hope?

To raise a child in the current situation of the pandemic, which is so different from what I grew up in, is a little scary. Therefore, I’m happy and thankful to see we’re starting to move forward with vaccines and events. I hope this will just become some bizarre time in our past that I can look back on and tell her about rather than experiencing it herself, and she can say, “Oh, wow, that’s weird.”

Any advice?

I have had it said to me: you can have it all, just not all at once. Well, that’s bullshit. I can have it all whenever I want it. It’s such a misconception that woman can’t be a mom and a badass in the boardroom. There are ways to make it work. And the people that say otherwise are only saying it because they didn’t have the guts to do it themselves. So, you absolutely can do whatever you want. You can have it all and, all at once. You just need to plan, and you can make it work.

Morning Coffees, Evening Walks, and Nonstop Cuddles: Our Community Talks Pandemic Silver Linings How the worst year ever had a few bright spots.

By Babe | Photo courtesy of HATCH

2020 was hard. Like really hard. And terrible. And scary. We lost a lot of people. We lost jobs. Our children lost their safe spaces and their communities. No, the pandemic was, and still is, total sh*t. But this Mother’s Day, we’re looking towards the light and celebrating the silver linings that came out of life in quarantine. The extra snuggles, the nightly dinners, the moments with our babes we’ll never get back – the surprising joys that emerged as a result of being together 24/7. Maybe it made us realize what’s actually important, or what we gained by slowing down and celebrating smaller moments in the absence of big ones. Whatever it was, life in the Q made us question how we want to live post-Covid-19, and the rituals we’ll take with us for a long time to come.

Kickin’ It at Home

For many of us, our homes doubled as work/life/childcare/school. And, while it was certainly a challenge, we got to settle into where we live (and who we live with) in a way more intimate way.

24/7 Hanging With the Fam’

It wasn’t always easy – actually it was never easy – but through nonstop togetherness, we rediscovered the safety and love that comes with family.

Slowing Down (Like, Way Down)

In the absence of work commutes, dinner plans and weekend trips, 2020 showed us what we were missing amidst the hustle and bustle of the “before times.”

Embracing the Little Things

2020 introduced us to Zoom dinners with friends, morning dance parties and the thrill of a growing houseplant. Little moments of magic that gave way to life’s biggest joys.
