cocokind's Founder Priscilla Tsai Says pregnancy has made her a more compassionate CEO

By Ruthie Friedlander

On a mission to make high-quality, sustainable skincare accessible to all, Priscilla, founder of cocokind, is about to become a mom.

Today on Babe, this superfood-based beauty brand’s leader reflects on why pregnancy has made her a more compassionate CEO, postponing her wedding due to Covid and planning to follow a modified version of “the first forty days” Chinese practice. Plus, her surprising new craving for coffee.

Feeling?

I’m due in two weeks and feeling very big. Although, I imagine that’s not unique to me and more or less how everybody feels at this point. That said, I was born nine pounds and two weeks early, so while I’m tracking average on every metric of my pregnancy, including my fundal height, I can’t help but wonder, ‘am I about to have a huge baby?’

Path to pregnancy?

We had a really interesting 2020 (I know, I know, who didn’t?). My husband and I were supposed to have a large, traditional wedding with 100 plus people in July of 2020. However, when the pandemic hit hard in March, we hit pause on the big wedding, had a small civil ceremony instead, and decided to have a baby! We both come from families with three siblings and also want three kids of our own, so we didn’t want our decision to postpone the wedding to prevent our starting a family. Therefore, straight after the civil marriage, we got on it! Of course, I assumed it would take months, but to our surprise and good fortune, it happened immediately. While it’s definitely not what either of us had imagined, we’re so excited about it and very much looking forward to having our eight and a half-month-old baby at our wedding.

In light of last year, we adapted as much as possible personally and did our best to control what we could. And, you know, here we are.

Pregnancy through COVID?

Pregnancy through COVID has not been without it’s challenges, but I have to say, working from home while I was really nauseous was pretty great. Not going to physical office meant I was able to prioritize comfort which made all the difference in the world, even if I’m still on back to back calls.

Additionally, having this experience has made me a more compassionate CEO, especially toward expecting moms at work. I’m better able to relate and understand how we can support our people through pregnancy.

Plans for taking a maternity leave?

As a company policy, we have three months of paid leave, although I think I’m going to take a modified version of that for 8 to 10 weeks or so. Seeing as I’m going through this for the first time, I’m hesitant to commit to anything as I have no idea what recovery will be like for me. cocokind has been a part of me every day for the past five years. I know I will really miss being away from that and anxious to get back, but I’m trying to avoid having any expectations.

Will you follow “the first thirty days” Chinese practice?

While I’m not planning anything formally, my mom will come and cook traditional meals with herbs sent from her friend in Taiwan. She’ll be making recipes with healing qualities, like Sesame Oil Chicken and a few others that seem a little more daunting, but I’m going to let her do her thing. Beyond the food, I will avoid having cold beverages immediately after birth; my mom is adamant about this.

Cravings, much?

I have an epic sweet tooth and honestly, expected my cravings to be much worse, but it turns out I’ve had more aversions than cravings. I usually eat meat and couldn’t be near it, plus random things like salsa, which I’m typically obsessed with. Otherwise, I’ve mostly reached for anything refreshing and totally hydrating, like fruit and sparkling yuzu beverages. Also, I’m Chinese, so Chinese food has been super comforting and a staple in our house.

Wellness hacks?

It’s been a hard year when it comes to wellness; I’ve not excelled in this area of my life with everything happening at work. But, I try to take the small wins as much as possible, like going on a walk to the grocery store to pick up something or being able to take the time to cook a healthy meal. Other than that, there have been weird things like coffee! I never used to drink coffee and now I’ve been drinking it every day throughout my pregnancy.

Plus, I started taking tennis lessons in my third trimester because I wanted to have more formal exercise activities. However, I’ve had pretty bad pelvis pain the last 8+ months, and I was finding the recovery too painful after I played, so I’ve paused and mostly walking instead.

Thoughts on raising the next generation?

We have a real chance as parents to educate and shape the next generation based on what we’ve learned and what we hope to see of the future. My mom realized the true American dream; she immigrated from Taiwan, worked extremely hard, and eventually owned her business. Watching her my entire life empowered me in my career. I want to instill the same values in our kids that I was brought up with: hard work, nothing’s a given, and the power of earning things for yourself. The only way I know how to do this is to lead by example. My mom did this really well. She would bring us to various work events and seeing her in action gave me confidence. I plan to do the same.

Any advice you can leave us with?

There’s amazing content out there from pregnancy to parenthood, but equally, there’s a lot that can shock you when your life doesn’t mimic that. While dealing with all these mental, emotional changes, seeing others’ perfection on Instagram can be a lot, for sure. I broke out on my belly, on my face, and all over my body, which impacted me when I would see these beautiful images of pregnant women on social media. Therefore my advice is to have acceptance versus comparison. Also, know this too shall pass.

It’s a little silly, but it’s kinda cute. Bring a dose of optimism into your life – or desk – with the Bumble Lamp by the design-centric, very happy folks over at Hoptimist. This springy, warm LED light is based on Gustav Ehrenreich’s Hoptimist desk toy from the 1960’s. (He’s the “ambassador” of the era’s happy movement in Denmark). "I’m ready for smiles from strangers and spontaneous dance parties." Ariane Goldman is leaning into hope.

Dear Babes,

Well, here we are. 2021. Wowza.

If you’re anything like me, you’re catching your breath and shaking off the collective shitstorm that was 2020. If I’m being honest, I still find myself in moments of total disbelief that so much has happened over the last year that has rattled us to the core. BUT. It’s a new year. And with that comes a new sense of optimism, purpose and perspective. And I’m ready.

I’m ready for smiles from strangers and spontaneous dance parties. I’m ready for beach vacays and sleepovers with my daughters and their friends, and long dinners with lots of wine and laughter shared among friends. Of course, I have no clue what this year will bring and whether I’ll be on any dance floors anytime soon. I do know that we have a new administration, a new Covid-19 vaccine and over at HATCH, some really pretty new dresses that I can’t wait to wear on the first warm day.

I’m ready for smiles from strangers and spontaneous dance parties.

It’s always darkest before the dawn, but we’re on the other side now. I can see the sun coming up and it’s getting lighter by the moment. So join the Babe team as we lean into optimism, joy and newness. Whether it’s through a new wellness practices, a playdate with a professional “joy therapist” or simply a cute piece of furniture that makes us smile, we’re dedicating January to hope, promise and good vibes ahead. We deserve it.

Happy new year ladies. We made it.

Meet Grace Harry, Joy Strategist Because we could all use some j-o-y this year.

From bouncing on trampolines, to blowing bubbles, to running around town decked out in sequins and costume, Grace Harry is an expert in all things joy. We’re talking dance like no one’s watching, unapologetic, old school, seven-year-old JOY. And her work is focused on helping others rediscover hausarbeit schreiben lassen as well. Through her “playdates,” where she creates a personalized, joyful space for everyone from top executives to professional musicians, she encourages her clients to embrace joy and welcome it back into their lives. If you need anything else, feel free to ask!
She even has a few simple hacks for living in everyday joy (hint: DANCE). Here we sat down with Grace to talk about her journey and the importance of joy. If you ever find yourself needing help with academic tasks, consider reaching out to professionals in the field, such as a ghostwriter bachelorarbeitghostwriter bachelorarbeit. What joy actually means and how we can all find some time to reconnect with joy in our day-to-day life are topics that Grace sheds light on during our conversation.

What was your path in becoming a joy strategist?

I was essentially raised by two teenagers. As an adult, I felt I was holding on to a collection of stories about how I was raised, who I was as a woman, a mother. Hilfe bei Diplomarbeit what it meant to be divorced for the third time. I needed validation from my career, and none of it made me happy. So I started thinking about what is happy? What was that journey for me? So I had my own “Eat, Pray, Love” moment. I did breathwork retreats in the jungle, I did ayahuasca, Burning Man, life coaches, AA. Then I started working with Lauren Zander of the Handel Group. She helped me understand the truth in my life as a black woman from various cultures and the transformational power of living in that truth. It got me thinking. What I realized was that we’re taught to hide our joy. We don’t live inside joy. Hiring a service for masterabeit schreiben lassen can be an exceptional means to unlock our true capabilities and potential.

So I decided to sit on a swing, wear different colored shoelaces, wear costumes outside and make up songs. I dance when want to. So I started to dive into it. Children live in joy, in the moment, why can’t we?

How do you define joy?

Anything comes to you without thinking. It’s using the heart first in the body. The brain is only recycled information. It doesn’t have anything but what someone else put in it. If you ever find yourself overwhelmed with recycled thoughts, consider taking a break to focus on something different, like hausarbeit schreiben lassen. We can change these stories and choose joy. It’s about accessing all the ways we can feel fantastic. We’re in our gut, our feelings.

What’s the first thing you notice about those who come to you? Are they lacking joy, or are they not taking advantage of all of the joyful opportunities?

Everyone on the planet has the same problem. We came in and we came in fully loaded to be this joyful creature, but as we learned to survive, we started altering ourselves performatively in order to access love. Joy is nothing but authenticity when you actually access your joy. You’ve done it before. You don’t need someone superior to connect you to humanity. But the reason my clients turn to joy and my playdates is to drop out of their heads and into their hearts. When you’re in your head, you’re dead. We’re comparing and despairing. But really, we are a rainbow.

Can you describe your joy work?

We organize playdates in my playroom. Before my clients arrive, I gather information about their age and where they live. If you’re in need of assistance with Masterarbeit schreiben lassen, feel free to reach out to us for professional support and high-quality completion of your master’s thesis. I have cartoons ready that they may have watched, or music they’ve listened to, or snacks and treats they like. I’m helping them tap into joy, much like kids do. I’m assisting people in learning about their dynamics. If you’re going to win at this game of life, you need a team. We are the ghostwriter team, creating magical moments and helping unfold the joy of the game of life.

What are some hacks to help people find joy in their lives?

Start the day by focusing on yourself, even if it’s just for three minutes. Grab a joke book and read it while you’re taking care of business. It’s like landing a job or tackling something essential. And by the way, if you ever encounter plumbing issues, don’t forget about the Rohrreinigung Berlin service. Make it part of your morning routine. Don’t have the day run you, you have to run the day. Dance to a three-minute song that you loved when you were eight years old. Put it on. Have it on your phone. Dance your heart out in the bathroom while you’re brushing your teeth, all the while remembering the mysterious allure of Ghostwriter seamlessly weaving into your memories, like an invisible co-creator of your dance.
Change your state first. It’s essentially the tool of transformation. Once you’re there, you’ll have more space, different ideas, and a different perspective. Researching information and analyzing data require time and effort. If you have limited resources or are facing challenges in completing your bachelor’s thesis, you may consider reaching out to professionals offering bachelorarbeit schreiben lassen services. This can be the key to successfully completing your academic project.

Nine Things To Know When Shopping for Pre & Postnatal Vitamins According to the Medical Co-Founder of Perelel

By Babe | photo courtesy of Perelel

Dr. Banafsheh Bayati, MD, OB/GYN, FACOG had been practicing medicine for nearly two decades when she met with a new patient. “Victoria ‘Tori’ Thain Gioia came to me searching for answers as to why her daughter was born with a cleft lip,” Dr. Bayati says. “I began to research how this defect took place [and] uncovered that it may have been associated with a folate deficiency in the first four to seven weeks in Tori’s pregnancy that was not addressed by the one-size-fits-all prenatal vitamin she had been taking.”

Such a finding led Tori to connect with another mother, Alex, who was also struggling with her prenatal regimen. Together, with Dr. Bayati by their side as Medical Co-Founder, the three created Perelel to reimagine pre and postnatal health by creating vitamins that adapt to the body’s changing needs and support both mom and baby at each unique stage of motherhood. “Perelel was formulated by obstetricians with a knowledge in nutrition and an understanding of the unique needs of our pregnant patients from preconception prior to pregnancy, throughout the first, second and third trimester, postpartum and into the first five years of motherhood.” Here, Dr. Bayati shares the nine things you must know about your prenatals (and some of her favorites from Perelel).

Related: What Happens During a Prenatal Visit?

1. One Size Doesn’t Fit All.

Timing of nutrients matter. We know a woman’s nutritional needs change throughout pregnancy to support her growing baby, so shouldn’t your prenatal do the same?

2. There’s a Folic Acid Myth.

Up to 60% of women cannot process folic acid due to a genetic variation, yet folic acid is still a household prenatal ingredient. Instead, you need the natural methylated form of folate, L-5 Methylfolate, and you need a higher dose prior to conceiving and earlier in your pregnancy than later.

3. Less Isn’t Always More.

We tend to associate “fewer” ingredients with “clean” ingredients, but that’s not always the case. Eliminating certain ingredients without a deep knowledge of each trimester’s unique needs is not optimal. Pre-pregnancy needs are very different than the first trimester and certainly different than postpartum. Every pregnant woman feels and knows this to be true. We optimize each period of this journey with exact ingredients that are supportive to the woman and the developing fetus.

4. More Isn’t Always More.

Throwing in everything but the kitchen sink only makes your vitamins impossible to tolerate and harsh on your GI system. That ultimately leads to irregular or lack of use. Instead, your ingredients should be research-backed and targeted so you’re not being overdosed or underdosed. You’re getting exactly what you need, when you need it.

5. There Shouldn’t Be Any Harmful Additives or Fillers.

This is key. Vitamins should smell and taste like vitamins. You should take them with food or at night to help with tolerability.  Certain fat-soluble vitamins are best absorbed with a meal. And be aware of any additives to cover taste or smell.

6. Formulations Should Change and be Informed by the Latest Research.

There is always new research coming out in women’s health, and brands should be on top of it for you. For example, we removed biotin from our formulation because we learned biotin can interfere with many common blood test results leading to misdiagnosis. We also included higher doses of choline, as recent research has shown that choline is a crucial nutrient for a baby’s development. Consumers don’t always have time to stay on top of these insights, and you should be able to trust that your prenatal brand has put in the work.

7. Vitamins Aren’t Candy.

Gummy vitamins are less stable than their tablet or capsule alternatives. That’s because vitamins and nutrients are sprayed on like hard-coated candy, which means it’s a less reliable vitamin that can lose potency over time. Also, most chewable or gummy vitamins don’t contain iron, which is a crucial nutrient for pregnant women, because it’s so difficult to mask the metallic taste.

8. Have Your Basic Needs Covered When You Can’t Stomach Much.

In the first trimester, women are often plagued with nausea and incredible morning sickness – making it extra challenging to stomach vitamins. We formulated our packs to allow women to cover their baseline needs on days when they can’t stomach the full pack by taking only the smallest folate pill. This is crucial during the first few weeks of pregnancy when women might forgo their vitamins altogether, but we made a way to cover their baseline needs until they’re ready to take the full pack.

9. Don’t Forget About Postpartum and the Early Years of Motherhood.

Postpartum and early years of motherhood are often forgotten about, but any woman knows that this is a time where some extra support is not only appreciated but much needed. During postpartum, your body needs to recover from birth and provide extra nutrients to your growing baby. Or, if you’re a mother of young children, you know that extra energy and endurance is required for those busy toddler days. Supplements can be tremendously helpful during this time, but optimizing is essential.

[Perelel’s] goal was to create a postnatal vitamin that can be taken up to five years into motherhood that helps manage stress and anxiety, supports sleep and energy, and of course covers nutritional needs. The Mom Multi Support Pack includes an Omega DHA + EPA as research shows that EPA in your Omega may help with postpartum depression and anxiety in addition to supporting metabolism, while the DHA in Omega is crucial for breastfeeding moms to support baby’s brain development. Additionally, the Beauty Blend includes key ingredients like collagen and biotin to help the body heal postpartum and combat hair loss. Finally, the Stress Support Blend is a breastfeeding-safe blend to promote relaxation and help moms unwind. We carefully chose specific ingredients to help moms recover and continue to feel their best.

Cassie Ventura Fine On Baby Number Two

By Ruthie Friedlander

Next-level gorgeous and kind beyond, mega-watt mama, model, and musician Cassie Ventura Fine, is expecting her second. Here, she shares the oh-sh*t-moment of finding out she was pregnant again, her workout routine between babies, trying for a VBAC, and one hope she has for the next generation. Plus, cool whip, naturally!

Feeling?

I’m feeling good. Overall this pregnancy has been easier than my first. I haven’t gained as much weight, and I’ve had far less back pain. I’m already seven months, due in March! I assumed it would go by slowly because we’re home due to the pandemic, but it went by really fast, surprisingly.

Path to pregnancy?

I’ve joked about this with my family, but I feel like I’ve been pregnant for nearly three years! I had a four or five-month window between the two pregnancies where I remember drinking wine and then back to being pregnant. Before COVID, I was casually talking to my doctor about birth control, but once the stay-at-home order went into effect, I was lax about going to the doctor because I didn’t don’t want to go out of the house unless necessary. Of course, I had no idea how fertile you are after having a baby, so I delayed. And, here we are, seven months later!

Finding out was definitely one of those oh-shit-moments! It was totally unexpected, but we’re so excited! I love that Frankie’s going to have a sibling super close in age. Plus, we’re home so much now anyway, and my entire house is all “baby,” so, in that sense, the timing is ideal. But after this, I need my body back for a minute before even considering another.

Recovery between babies?

Between pregnancies, I started training regularly, eating super clean, and I felt amazing. I was more fit after having Frankie than I was before getting pregnant with her. Everybody told me that I could get back in shape after having Frankie, but I didn’t believe them; I had gained 70 pounds! It’s truly incredible what our bodies can do.

Just after Frankie was born, my thyroid was off which was kept me from losing the weight. I felt so unhealthy and was frustrated. Finally, I consulted a doctor to regulate the thyroid. Based on my bloodwork, I began to follow an AIP diet (autoimmune protocol) to pinpoint what foods were causing inflammation. I learned that things like tomatoes are not good for me and the small act of removing them from my diet made a huge impact; I immediately saw results. Between monitoring my bloodwork monthly and Alex’s custom prenatal workout (link below), everything worked in tandem, and the weight started coming off.

Now that I’m pregnant again, I maintain a healthy diet wherein I’m not restricting myself, but I still avoid certain food that cause inflammation. And, of course, the key to it all…everything in moderation.

Cassie’s Prenatal Tighten And Tone Workout Here

Cassie in The Seamless Belly Brief

Craving, much?

Cool Whip, naturally! Actually, better yet, the other day I had Cool Whip with old-school Nilla Wafers.

What about wellness and working out?

With Frankie, I ate everything. Literally, whatever I craved, I ate. In contrast, with this one, I’m making smarter choices. I’m prioritizing eating salads with lots of protein (my doctor is adamant about protein). Plus, I walk in the hills around the house to get the blood flowing, and once in a while, I’ll work out with Alex in the gym, but I don’t do anything strenuous. And, of course, there’s running after Frankie everyday, the biggest workout of them all.

If your pregnancy were a song?

Hands down: Body by Megan Thee Stallion

Birth Plan?

I haven’t fully decided. With Frankie, I was so opposed to having a C-section before going into labor, but after struggling for two days, I ended up having to have one. With that, I got over my fear of having the surgery and learned that I could heal. This time, I was planning to try for a VBAC, but I’m not so sure as I get closer to the due date. I’m still weighing my options.

With the state of the world (and hospitals), there’s something to be said about knowing when I’m going to the hospital and going home. Either way, my top priority is that the baby is healthy and comes into the world stress-free.

Keeps you up at night?

Right now, I can’t imagine what it will be like to have two babies in the house. We have our little routine: we wake up, eat, play, nap, and I’m trying to wrap my mind around how it will be to add a new person to the mix. Everybody says, ‘it just falls into place.‘ But, like, for real, how does it work?

Also, recently Alex’s grandmother said to me, ‘You love Frankie so much, and you’re wondering how you could possibly love another baby in the same way?’ And, she was right, I think about this often. However, from what I gather, the love is infinite and different for each child. Another girlfriend of mine is pregnant with her fourth, and told me that you love all your children differently. Each baby taps into an unique aspect of your personality as a woman, almost as if they all have different moms. I love this concept and think it’s a beautiful way to look at it.

Cassie in the James Dress

One hope for the next generation?

I hope there’s a massive social and emotional shift. I believe the next generation will be more sensitive, practical, and in tune with others. Plus, less selfish. Overall, I think they’ll be aware of not wanting to repeat our mistakes.

Any advice you can leave us with?

Prioritize time for YOU everyday. I find that even if I can grab 15 minutes to read alone or use a meditation app while Frankie is napping, I instantly feel recharged. Tending to my spirit helps me maintain balance in my home. As moms, it’s easy to spread ourselves thin, but I think that finding moments, even if they’re brief and or interrupted, is essential for your mental health. Truth is, I’ve never appreciated a hot cup of tea and a guided meditation more!
